Advertising
There are a wide range of ways to advertise posts including:
- The internet – the vacancies page on ReliefWeb or your organisations own web site
- Local email distribution lists or web-sites i.e. umbrella organisations or Humanitarian Information Centres
- Newspapers – local, national or international
- Notices – outside your office and those of other organisations
- Word of mouth
Each method has advantages and disadvantages which are summarised in resources.
- Advertise too widely, and you will be overloaded with applications which you may not be able to process.
- Advertise too narrowly, and you may get insufficient or inappropriate applications.
See resources for a checklist of what to include in an advertisement.
In an emergency, consider at least notices outside your office and those of other organisations, local email distribution lists or web-sites and word-of-mouth as a minimum for national recruitment.
Think carefully how applications will be received – avoid any unauthorised or inadvertent screening
